Does embracing diversity restrict expression? What we should consider when portraying "diverse individuals."
"Does Considering Diversity Restrict Expression? — What We Want to Think About When Depicting a 'Diverse Individual'" Event Announcement!📝
Creative Studio koko is hosting the 7th koko no me🌱 event.
"koko no me" is a space for people involved in "creating and delivering" to empower one another while exchanging diverse individual ideas, perspectives, and emotions, and exploring paths toward the world we want to live in from where we stand right now.
Our theme is "What we want to talk about right now." We cover everything from the planning process, production background, and work environments in creative production and expression, to our relationship with society and what we can do. We hold events with guest speakers and publish articles🤍

[Book Publication Commemoration: "How to Depict a Diverse and Complex World: A Record of Expression and Reflection by 12 Manga Artists and Illustrators"]
The theme for our 7th event is "Does Considering Diversity Restrict Expression? — What We Want to Think About When Depicting a 'Diverse Individual'"
In recent years, the terms "diversity" and "inclusion" have been discussed frequently across media, publishing, advertising, and the arts.
However, while these have become watchwords for protecting freedom of expression, there are also many who voice concern that an atmosphere of self-censorship—driven by the desire "not to hurt anyone" or "to avoid controversy"—might be narrowing the scope of expression itself.
In this event, starting from the question "Does diversity narrow expression?", we will consider the "relationship between expression and society" from the perspectives of both book editors and professionals in advertising and creative fields.
We aim to create a space where creators, distributors, and audiences can gather to engage in open dialogue and learn from one another. By bringing together people with different backgrounds and experiences, we hope to encounter perspectives and voices rarely heard in daily life, leading to new insights and hints for future action.

Purpose of the Event
- To share the realities of the front lines where "diversity" and "freedom of expression" collide.

- To provide an opportunity to think about diversity not as "formal considerations to avoid backlash," but as "relationships."
Who Should Participate?👀
- Editors, writers, and those in PR, advertising, or design.
- Those handling diversity and expression in corporations, government, or NPOs.
- Those interested in expression, ethics, and social issues.
📕Book Introduction

Let’s think together about
our ever-changing world and expression.
In recent years, due to the long-standing efforts of stakeholders, advocates, and researchers, the diverse ways humans exist, as well as deep-seated discrimination, prejudice, and unequal social structures, have become more apparent. Consequently, we have increasing opportunities to encounter terms like "political correctness," "DEI," and "diversity," as well as expressions that reflect these perspectives. While these are vital efforts aimed at a fair and equal society, they also require us to examine ourselves. Could my expression—or the expressions I have received—have hurt someone, or perhaps even myself? Facing such questions is a complex experience, sometimes accompanied by pain, conflict, and confusion.
Against the backdrop of our current situation, this book features interviews with 12 manga artists and illustrators who continue to create while confronting "people," the "world," and "expression." We ask them about their motivations, conflicts, daily thoughts, and how their perspectives have changed over time, alongside a selection of their past works.
